Great story and idea, wrong director. Looking for artsy bullshit that means nothing? Just call upon Stan the Man. Given at the time it was made, there wasn't a lot he could do with it, but the solution was not chemical filters and aligning visual cuts at the expence of continuity. Again, they tried to do something new, but it didn't work. Props for trying, no props for trying the right thing.
Unless you've read the book, watched this little animation, or dropped acid while watching it, this movie makes no sense at all. This defeats the purpose of storytelling. It's like if I were to tell a story at a campfire, and to embelish it I did different voices for all the characters, but after 10 minutes or so stoped telling a story and just started describing things around me in those voices for a while and then stopped when I was tired. The story is lost, and the listeners are confused.
(In case you hadn't noticed, I don't appreciate that movie much. I WANT MY 2 HOURS BACK, DAMN IT.)
