Jack Thompson. Were you to scour the Earth, searching high and low, you'd be hard-pressed to come up with someone easier to hate. He parades around, telling of the evils of videogaming and how it destroys the morals of society, singlehandedly causing otherwise innocent children to become rapists and serial axe-murderers.
A lawyer at heart, he makes his case with shock-tactics and and endless list of meaningless statistics. But is this warrior for the cause of the salvation of civilization willing to talk over his point of view or debate it with anyone? Not a chance.
Every open letter to him I've seen is invariably replied to with an angry demand that he stop being harrassed, lest he should sue the people trying to contact him. This leads me to an interesting question- does he even bother to read any messages he gets, or is he so deprived of love that no matter what you send him he'll spitefully threaten you?
And just how does he intend to prosecute every single person he's threatened to, anyway? He'd have to have hundreds of open harassment cases going at once, which would certainly draw a lot of time away from his crusade. Perhaps he intends to invent an inversion of the class-action suit in which he can sue every gamer in the world as a conglomerated entity...
What do you think about this guy? Is he for real or full of self-righteous shit? Was he born with a stick up his ass, or was it put there later? And, most importantly, do you think he has power enough to do anything at all about the gaming industry's ability to add mature themes to their productions?

Here is a group of emails between him and other people: www.vgcats.com/jack.phpThere is also a rumor that his 12 year old son (I think he is 12) answers most of his e-mails.

Then their son spells like Sab, because I've read a few of those letters and they are poor.

People really still hate video games that much? Honestly, in this day and age of the intraweb, where any 11 year old can easily tread sites even I fear to go, I wouldn't think video games would be such a problem, in the grand scheme of things. Really, when I did finally sit down and watch some scenes from GTA, I was more surprised by how tame it was than anything else.
I just did a bit of research of this Jack Thompson; and I found one quote particularly interesting:
"The Bible doesn't promote killing innocent people," Thompson said. "Grand Theft Auto does. Islam does. Islam promotes the killing of innocent people. The Quran requires the infidel, whether Jew or Christian, to be killed. … That's a core essence of the religion. … Muhammad was a pirate who killed infidels and who advocated the killing of infidels. Not a nice guy. Osama bin Laden is in keeping with his fine tradition."
Right. And there's nothing insanely conservative Islamist Osama bin Laden loves more than a good sex simulator. The lowness of that blows really amazes me, it's one thing to somehow link violent video games to Jihad, but then to grossly generalize both as the soul origins of evil in American society while idealizing Christianity really reaches a new level of xeno-ignorance.

It really pisses me off how these people hide behind my religion, and use it to their personal gain. People like him make it hard for me to proclaim that I'm a christian without some stupid jackass coming up to me and saying "God's not real. If he was why did he make the hurricanes kill everyone!!111BBQ"

As a side note to Jack's comment on Islam, while I don't ever see myself "submitting to God", I've never met a Muslim I didn't like.

(Though, granted- the Christian Church isn't all peachy and happy in its history.) As a side note to Jack's comment on Islam, while I don't ever see myself "submitting to God", I've never met a Muslim I didn't like. Good call. I know my share of Muslims, and they're all peace-loving people who are at least as interested in the wellbeing of others as most Christians I know.
