And that's something new? There really is always that risk, not to be cynical but arabs being involved in Terrorism goes back to Munich. But its kind of stating the obvious. I've been doing some research for those who want to go guns blazing into Chechneya though and I'd like to present my findings on the Russian side (NOTE: I am NOT justifying what happened at the school, I am showing how we cannot choose to side with one or the other evil though based on who gets the most news coverage. )
Note these cover what Russia had done to the Chechans, both sides have done some unsavorry things. If you wish I can make a list of the Chechans actions as well.
1940s (WWII): Stalin deports muslims Chechens and Ingush (the two major islamic groups this war is being fought by that aren't foriegn Jihadists) to Central Asia
1992: Russian tanks surround and destroy Ingush villages The Economist describes it as the first "Ethnic Cleansing Operation in the Russian Federation"
1994-1995: 100, 000 killed many civilians in Grozny during russian bombings
1999: 15, 000 are dislocated from Moscow and 60, 000 forced to register. Russia begins bombing Grozny, then in december gives civilians few time to leave the city of Grozny before they move in a level it. EU warns Russia about what its doing
2000: Grozny is taken after weeks of fighting completely devastating the capital and leaving thousands in Refugee camps. UN human rights commissioner declares that human rights violations are extremely serious.
2001: FSS (Formerly known as KGB) takes over, human rights concerns are continued as evidence of torture and mass graves mount.
Meanwhile: All across Central Asia during the 90's Al Qaeda has been gaining strength, and out of desperation more young men turn to him. Terrorist attacks against russian civilians goes on the rise. The West has continued to only take actions with words through the first Bush Administration, the Clinton Administration, and the second Bush administration who happened to say Putin had a "good soul."
In conclusion both the islamic terrorists who have been taking advantage of a people's yearning for a country of their own just like the rest of the former Soviet Union have been clashing with a Russian army guilty of War Crimes in my opinion at least and many of you will probably agree. It is clear that neither side can have the blame squarely placed on them, it is also clear that in order for this to end both sides have to be placed in check. Oh and it might help to get Putin out of power, the guy is kind of a authoritarian bastard.
