In the year 2118 AD, mankind was in the middle of a new renaissance. Technological and cultural advancements were at an all time high, and with the invention of the jumpdrive, quick and reliable interstellar travel had become a reality. At first every nation spread off on its own, colonial planets swearing allegiance to the various super-powers that remained on Terra.
However, 5 years later all of that would change. On January 2nd, 2123, contact was lost with a colony on Tau Ceti Prime. An investigation party was sent, and never returned.Horrified by the possible implications, a multi-national force was amassed, and sent to the system. What they found would start a war.
They found the Xel'lotath.
The Xel'lotath were an alien race, the first ever encountered by man, and they were hostile. Striking with an animalistic ferocity and technology never before seen by humankind, the Xel'lotath had laid waste to the colony, and destroyed the entire investigation group. A pitched battle ensued, during which much of the Terran fleet was destroyed, the survivors barely managing to make a blind jump away from the system.
When they returned to Terra and told their story, the leaders became afraid. It seemed certain the Xel'lotath would attack again. In order to facilitate defence, the major nations of Terra signed the landmark London Treaty, uniting all of humanity under one government, the Federation.
The Federation began an immediate strengthening of the fleets and outer colonies against Xel'lotath aggression, and were almost too late.
During a naval review at Jupiter's Wake Station, the Xel'lotath stumbled onto the Sol System. One third of the fleet was at Jupiter, and only 13 ships escaped. Although many were lost, the battle forced the Xel'lotath away, severly crippling their attack force. They haven't attacked Sol since.
2 years have passed since then, and the war still rages. Ships are lost on both sides on an almost daily basis, and to date only one communication has ever been established with a Xel'lotath, which only established both their name and their intent. Individual pilots have been captured, but all commit ritual suicide before they can be interrogated.
As the war drags into its third year, the Crusader-class Assault Carrier 'Providence' is finally leaving drydock. The ship has a very colored history. It was the most heavily damaged of the 13 ships that survived the Wake Station battle, but its then-captain and now Admiral, Derek Haltol, was directly responsible for turning the tides of the battle, keeping the Xel'lotath from attacking Terra itself. It has been in and out of repair stations the entire war, but always returning with a major victory. Most recently it returned to Terra after participating in a decicive battle in the Arrakis system, but in the process the ship was heavily damaged, losing nearly all of its fighter wing, and even taking a direct hit to the bridge, resulting in the death of its most recent captain, Jonathan Shinzeki.
Some are starting to whisper that the ship may be 'cursed'.
Even so, every ship is needed to keep the enemy at bay. A fresh crew has been prepared, and a full complement of cutting edge fighters provided as the ship prepares to leave port in a matter of hours. With a ragtag band of miscrients from many different facets of life, even with its streak of good (or bad) luck, no one expects the Providence to survive this time around.
And yet, in spite of it all, this same group of misfits could very well change the course of the war...

The rules:
1) Listen to the GMs
2) All characters will be part of the Providence
If you're joining the RP, you're on the Providence. I will be contacting a few players to play Xel'lotath aces. If I want you to do it, I will talk to YOU. Do not PM/IM me asking for the job.
3) Pilots are needed, but you don't have to be one.
You can have a character to do anything on the ship, ranging from mechanics, to engineering to bridge crew, but it is recommended that most players be pilots.
4) This is war, life is cheap
Pilots can, and probably WILL be killed. All players will be given a chance to eject before their fighter is destoyed, however. IF YOU FAIL TO EJECT, YOUR CHARACTER IS DEAD. Make a new one. Also, new characters will only arrive on the ship during re-supplies. In other words, if you die you have to either make a character to fill another role or wait for a resupply to add a new pilot.
5) Enjoy yourself
If you don't think you can have fun doing this, then don't. If you think this sounds fun to you, welcome aboard.
Character profile:
Name: Callsign: Age: Gender: Description:
Squadron: (When squadrons are posted, select which one you want to be part of.)
History: (for the most part, your history is up to you, however the vast majority of the crew is make of rookies, meaning you're probably a recent academy-graduate with no real combat experience)
As a note, it is ENCORAGED to play the character you want to be. Want to be the flamboyant hot shot? Go for it. The cool, collected ace? That's fine too. I wish to encorage a variety of characters in order to facilitate role playing and maybe even create some inter-character tensions.

Squadrons
There are four squadrons that make up the Providence combat wings, each one using a different kind of space fighter.
Killer Bees
The Killer Bees specialize in piloting interceptors, and their current fighter of choice is the SF-01d 'Arrow'. The squadron is mainly used for recon and quick intercept missions. Squadron symbol is a bee's head on top of a red circle.
Thor's Hammer
Thor's Hammer squadron is composed of the 'heavy hitting' craft on board. They mainly specialize in delivering the big blows against enemy capital ships and other high-priority targets. They pilot the SA-04 'Warhammer'. Squadron symbol is a hammer surrounded by white lightning on a blue diamond.
Sky Raiders
Sky Raiders squadron was started by a former pirate-turned-ace. They are the 'jacks-of-all-trades', piloting SF-03 'Gladius' fighters, a machine that is capable of performing many different roles, but it is neither as fast as an Arrow or as much of a damage dealer as the Warhammer. The Sky Raiders are the largest squadron on the Providence. Their symbol is a Gladius fighter swooping down with guns blazing on a white shield.
Death's Head
(Currently, Death's Head is not recruiting, but will later in the RP)
Death's Head squadron is the Providence's 'special ops' group. They are composed of the elite pilots, called on to pull off missions that are too sensitive for large groups, but would be considered suicidal by normal pilots. They have the highest casualty rate of any squadron, but just the same are the paragon all pilots aspire to be. They have no set craft, but rather use whatever fits the mission profile. They are also occasionally called on to 'field test' experimental craft. Squadron symbol is a skull and crossbones on a black triangle.

Weaponry
Mass Driver - Mass Drivers vary in calliber, but are generally kept at around .50. The term refers to any weapon based around a small projectile fired by explosive chemicals. They are incredibly effective in space, as there is little friction to slow the round before it hits, allowing them to do more damage and have greater range than in atmospheric conditions.
.50 cal versions generally are used in close/moderate range, do light damage per shot but can fire frequently, and carry around 1500 rounds.
Rail Gun - A magnetic accelerator that fires a solid slug of heavy metal, occasionally with a high-powered explosive tip. The weapon is available in multiple 'scales', with the largest commonly found on capital ships.
Small scale Rail Guns recharge fast, but cause less damage than their larger counterparts. They can carry 100 rounds of solid or explosive tipped ammunition, depending on the mission profile.
Medium scales recharge slower, but do additional damage. They can carry 75 rounds of solid or explosive tipped ammuntion.
Sledge Rockets - An option for the fighter mounts. Sledge Rockets are dumbfire weapons, and essentially a large explosive with a high-speed engine. High damage if it hits, but very easy to dodge.
IR-Missile - In solar system combat, it can be difficult for heat-seakers to maintain a lock on a craft, as larger heat sources distract them. To counter this, infa-red beam missles were developed. An IR missile 'tags' its target with a beam of infa-red light released by the fighter launching it. The missile locks onto this beam, and follows it in. Medium damage an excellent tracking, but can only track while the targeted fighter is in the launching ship's sights.
'Seraphim' Heavy Bombs - Only able to be mounted on Warhammer-class strike craft, Seraphim bombs are the largest single pieces of ordinance that can be deployed from a small craft. These bombs have excellent tracking ability and do an insane amount of damage thanks to their 'tactical'-yield fusion warheads, but they are too slow to be used on anything smaller than a transport craft. Pilots must use care when deploying these weapons. Due to a fail-safe mechanism, the bombs will detonate if hit by weapons fire after being launched.
Distort Guns - Low-powered energy blasters. D-Guns, as they are comonly known, are the reason the Xel'lotath were able to do so much damage early on. Luckily, a change in the armor materials on Terran fighters causes most of the energy to 'reflect' off, making shots from a D-Gun more survivable. They fire almost as fast as a traditional mass driver, and don't seem to be dependent on ammunition. It is unknown how the Xel'lotath produce the power necessary to use these guns.
Ion Cannons - Ion Cannons are another energy weapon, and a much more devastating one. They fire what ammounts to a coherant lance of charged particles, high enough in energy to melt most froms of armor, including the new versions to protect against D-Guns. In addition, a direct hit from an Ion Cannon that does not destroy the ship, will almost certain disable some of the systems, leaving it a sitting duck. Luckily, it seems to take approximately a second and a half for an Ion Cannon to properly recharge between shots.
'Giga' Cannon - A weapon recently seen mounted on 'Behemoth' class vessels. It is believed to be a highly-upgraded version of the Ion Cannon. The Giga Cannon seems to work around plasma instead of charged particles, however, making the damage much more devastating. It takes over 7 seconds for the cannon to recharge between shots, but a few of those shots can seriously damage most capital ships. This weapon has greatly increased the threat rating of Behemoth class ships.
Swarm Pods - Pods that fire 'swarms' of six missiles at a time. This missles do little damage on their own, but are hard to dodge and VERY good at tracking their targets. Each Pod carries 30 missiles, giving the Xel'lotath pilot 5 shots.
To date, no Xel'lotath ship has ever been seen carrying a 'heavy bomb' type weapon, although some of their designs have hardpoints that seem to be capable of holding such weapons.

MR, I thought I said Lazek was going to be the bomber squad leader?
Name: Lazek Killigan Callsign: Hammer-1 Age: 28 Gender: Male Height: 6’1” Weight: 162 lbs. Description: Lazek is a tall, medium-built man with thick black hair and dark brown eyes. He has a moustache and goatee, though he is considering shaving these off. He usually wears just about anything when not in a pilot suit.
Squadron: Thor’s Hammer (Squad Leader)
History: Lazek Killigan is a former pirate leader who was captured about a year ago and given a simple choice: Fly in the defense of Terra against the Xel’lotath, or be executed for his many crimes. He chose the former, but even to this day he still resents taking orders from the Federation. He was assigned to the Providence, where he became squad leader of the vessel’s bomber squadron, “Thor’s Hammer”.
Today, Lazek pilots his Warhammer, Jormungand, against high-profile targets and enemy capital ships in the service of the Federation.

Name: Allan Parker Callsign: Raider-12 Age: 20 Height: 6' Weight: 158 Gender: Male Description: Has blue eyes, dark, mid-neck length hair and is slightly skinny. When not in pilot suit, usually wears t-shirts, jeans and a leather jacket that he is very fond of.
Squadron: Sky Raiders
History: Allan Parker is just slightly more than your typical rookie hotshot. Born into a millitary family, Allan grew up with the ever-present force of a strict father, probably why he is a very much lighthearted person now. It was really no contest that he would become a pilot, he has had interest in flying since he was two, and with the millitary background in his family, it was was just no contest. Straight out of training, Allan is setting out to prove that he is as good as his intstructors thought.

Name: Vic Carthwell Callsign: Captain Age: 30 Gender: Male Description: A tall, rugged man with fairly broad shoulders, short, spiked dark hair, and a somewhat unshaven face. A physically imposing man in appearance, though that is merely the outer appearance.
Squadron: None
History: The latest man to lead the helm of the legendary (or accursed) Providence, Vic Carthwell is not exactly the most noteable man the Federation have. Of course, considering the rest of the roster in the Providence, and considering the fact that most other captains would like to steer as far away from the ship as possible, Carthwell was literally the only man who was both qualified and crazy enough to take the position.
So what can be said about this man? Not exactly the most well groomed man, and in spite of his size, he seemingly comes off as a bit aloof and intimidated by even the 'bridge bunnies'. ^^ Make no mistake, however, that while he isn't the most decorative captain, and doesn't come off as the meanest, Vic Carthwell is a more capable officer than he truly makes himself out to be. He is a strong tactician, and is more than willing to bend the rules. People underestimate him, and they will get burned.
At the same time, he doesn't take himself very seriously, so it's easy not to take him too seriously. He likes drinking, he likes television, he has a thing for playing cards and videogames, and you may find him smoking a cigar or two on the bridge. Not exactly laid back, but not exactly strict, either, in his approach.

Oh. Sorry. I could have sworn I meant Thor's Hammer, but I guess I didn't type that...

Name: Seth Morne Callsign: Killer 5 Age: 18 Gender:Male Description: About average size for his age, fairly long silver hair, blue eyes, and skinny.
Squadron: Killer Bees
History: Young and cocky, he was drafted into the war, and chosen for pilot's training. He makes rash decision on the battlefield that puts him in serious risk. His luck hasn't run out yet, but e always sighs to himself, "One day this life of mine will be over. I will not live forever." His parent's died in the Jupiter's Wake incident, shortly after his 18th birthday, he was drafted into the war, chosen for pilot's training. He barely made it through basic training, breaking almost every code and regulation. But he was a natural born pilot, and they knew they would someday need him on the battle field, and cut him some slack. He has seen some combat, very little though. He was transfered to the Providence shortly after his first battle.
