Okay, to recap,
Maybe what the MSPB needs to pick up steam is an RPG. Something grand and epic, like a space opera. And not just dicking around for twenty sum pages until it dies, something with structure and theme and motif, wheels within wheels, that sort of thing.
I was thinking of something along the lines of building the RPG as five or so "short stories". That is, each faction is given a particular plot point to reach, and that ends said chapter of overall RPG. That and I think it would be interesting to incorporate some philosophical undertones. The setting could be either planetary or galactic, and while most people seem to favor planetary at this point, I'll leave it open to discussion.
So then, as the thread states, this is mostly for brainstorming. Should we include aliens, mecha, 'other'? What about the main story, the potential fall of an Empire, the coming of a messiah? What about tech level (although this is largely tied to setting)?
And then there's the philosophical angle, what do you favor? Ethics, ontology, mythology, psychology, ecology, etc.
If anything else, I'd like to make this one "literary". That is, while there can be combat and exploration of technology, I think it would be best to focus on the above elements, character and story, rather than action and gadgetry.

Question by mere curiosity, are you familiar with the Metal Gear storyline? It has alot of psychology and other themes, and the other board I posted one at people are being lazy bastards beyond me and C8.
Get on AIM and perhaps we can discuss some details.
Though as a note, what MSPB would need to pick up steam would really be
1. A new host 2. More recruitment/ activity by already present members.
I've got a few ideas if Cyg/ you want to talk about that too.

Ooh. "Soft Sci-fi." Technology takes the backseat to storyline. Me likey. And maybe a Mythology angle. Do something based around the basic archetypes, maybe?

Me likey as well, I think it's a great idea. I'd be able to help with philosophical and pscychological undertones because I'm taking a Philosophy class in North Carolina in a few weeks, I'd take down my notes in the class and see what I could encorporate.
Basic archetypes sound good as well, or atleast something to where we can explore the idea. Even if the story-line is simple, we can still dive deep within it. I'll try and think of some possible sci-fi qualities and ideas that would make for a good narrative.

Unfortunately Zorak, I've never played a Metal Gear game, and thus know little about that world. Sorry. Yes exactly, archetypes. As Joseph Campbell said, "The myth is the public dream and the dream is the private myth." I think it would be fascinating to explore the relationship between dreams/the subconscious and mythology/religion through an RPG.

I think having a bit about Memes would be cool. MGS2 brought up a few neat bits and I think it would be interesting to expand on such a concept.
Also, I think we should do this RPG in a vein that would transfer well into a more organized format. Ie, if we wanted, afterwards we could like put it on Fictionpress or something fo such format.
